The Third Video

Introduction

The Third Video was founded on July 15th, 1987, the day when martial law was lifted in Taiwan. Inspired by the Green Squad's documenting of the airport incident which caused a tremendous impact on the society, and which proved alternative media had its function, The Third Video was founded "as a countermeasure to the monopoly of mainstream media". Before it shut down the operation in September 1988, The Third Video had produced more than 20 projects. It focused on "the third newsreel" at the beginning stage; after 4 issues, it shifted to event-based projects. Its principal members were Chaing Kuan-Ming and Weng Ming-Chi, and their credits include Fire of Hope, Rip the Evil Out of Orchid Island, among others. The Third Video financed its operation by the bank loan that Weng acquired and by selling videotapes. After the 520 event, Weng was arrested and jailed. The Third Video fell into financial crisis, and was officially shut down in Septemner 1988.
