HSIA Hisao-Chu

Introduction

Hsiao-Chu Hsia, is a Taiwanese artist who obtained her Master's degree in Community Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art and now resides in New York City. Her background in psychology influences her focus on mental health and relational art in her performance pieces. Hsia's goal is to merge psychology and art, which she calls "psychological art," to apply psychological theories on a larger scale and offer a scientific perspective in her art practice. Hsia views art as a tool to bring attention to overlooked issues and encourage people to think critically. Her interactive performances encourage active participation and engagement, offering a unique perspective on social issues. Through her art, Hsia aims to bring people together to spark conversations and inspire change. She believes that critical thinking is the key to making progress. For Hsia, creating art is a way to stand in solidarity with her community as a member of the BIPOC group. Her works support and advocate for her community, using art as a means of communication.
