After watching a documentary that changed his way of seeing the world, Hsu gave up his career in the electronics industry to became a documentary director. He was the cinematographer of the documentary films Rock Me to the Moon and Ways Into Love. He transitioned into the directorial role in 2013. His documentary We Want to Get Married was nominated for the Best Documentary at the 2015 Golden Harvest Awards.
