Synopsis

Yours Truly, Miss Chinatown features the intimate stories of some unforgettable young women who vie for the title Miss Los Angeles Chinatown, while struggling to define themselves in two cultures with different values and expectations. The crown is a link to the past, while the women's lives are a sign of the changing times.

Documentary cameras follow the lives of the three subjects for several years during a pivotal time in their lives as they are just starting to find out who they are as women. What emerges is some of the rarely heard voices of young Asian American women at the turn of the 21st century.

Every year, more than a dozen young Asian American women compete for the crown of Miss Chinatown Los Angeles. This documentary film follows two contestants through the course of the 2003 pageant and beyond, along with their alter ego - the pimpled, whisky drinking, self proclaimed, “Miss Chinatown Second Runner Up”. As the spectacle unfolds onstage, so does the drama of their lives – there are no pat beauty pageant answers to real life struggles with love, family, culture, and life as a modern woman.
