Synopsis

A group of new Taiwan daughters-in-law who are from South East Asia, originally studied together at the Mei-Nung Foreign Bride Literacy Class. On December 7th, 2003, they formed the first nation-wide foreign bride’s organization, the TransAsia Sisters Association, Taiwan. The association combined sisters from the south and the north that were actively participating in community life in their own areas. They wanted the local people get to know and understand them better, they wanted to actively contribute their services to the local communities, they wanted to prove that they truly belonged here through their actions.

In spite of having different cultural backgrounds and of speaking different languages, and after having left their original families to move to Taiwan, the common fate they were sharing helped hold them together. The Taiwan languages, no matter if they were Mandarin, Hakka or Hokien(Taiwanese), became their common languages for communication. They understand now that besides their original families, their spouse’s families, and participating in the TransAsia Sisters Association, Taiwan life is redefining the meaning of their “Family”.
