Chien-yu Yu

Introduction

Yu, Chien-yu was born in Yilan, Taiwan, he received his Bachelor in Fine Arts in Theater from Chinese Culture University. In 1988, he witnessed the 520 event around Taipei Train Station. This experience forever changed his perception of the media. In 1990, he made his first television series Spring Everyday with Yilan as the backdrop. His first activist work is "Myth of Zero-Pollution", recording Yilan's resistance to the setting up of the chemical plant. He started a project on the Karalan tribe in Yilan and another on an organization for mentally challenged children. Realizing making documentaries would not help those groups receive the support they need, he turned into an activist/ documentarian, filming political and social movements. After the death of Chen Nan-Jung in 1989, he had continuously documented the Taiwanese independent movement until the 2000 presidential election. His television directing credits include Spring Breeze Everywhere, Taiwan Mambo and Gangster Professor.
