The film is the director’s master thesis at UCLA. Featuring a middle-aged veteran living in the Feng Tien industrial area, Hualien county, the film is a realistic and powerful portrayal of his simple daily life.
It opens with the protagonist telling the audience his name, age and where he came from. In the first person narration, the protagonist tells us how he spends his day. As he irrigates his farms time elapses from sunrise to sunset. It is a film about ordinary people at an unordinary historical moment. Liu Pi-Chia presents himself naturally before the camera and the viewers could feel the director’s trust and respect for his subject. The power of the film resides in its realistic approach, and attempt to represent the subjects the way they are, and to leave the task of interpretation to the viewers. This is also why there are no sound effects but only location sound recording and voice-over.
