Synopsis

Traditionally, the Tao people always harvest flying fish and dolphin from their plank boats in the southern waters. In the summer of 2007, they rowed westward to the unfamiliar water, across the Kuroshio, to call on the civilized Taiwan for a change. On their journey to Taiwan, the Tao people have found themselves in a predicament under the circumstances of contemporary civilization and modern Taiwanese society.

Director Statement

" I was attracted by Syaman Rapongan’s writing of the ravishing ocean of the Tao, so I started to try to learn more about Lanyu (Orchid Island) and begun a script about this island. I wanted to bring the fantastic color of the Orchid Island and the Tao’s legend of catching the flying fish on screen. Then I learned about ‘Ocean Etude 2007’, Tao people’s plan of building a 14-oar plankboat to cross over the Kuroshio to head for Taiwan. I joined them up and made this documentary. I’m grateful to the Tao friends who rowed the plankboat last summer. It was wonderful with you." - Lin Cheng-Sheng
