All and Nothing-Li Yuan Chia

by LIAO I-ling,CHU Po-ying

LI Yuan-chia is the first Chinese Conceptual Artist. His ideal of “making a new world” had been in form as he experienced exile during World War II. After war, he studied modern art in Taiwan. From China, Taiwan, Italy, to London, and finally settled down in a conservative village of northern England in 1970s. He built up a museum by his own hand there. It is a museum praising for freedom and open for everyone. It is also his home.

In his whole life, he stood against commercializing art, and practiced art with effort like an acetic, proposing questions to the world: “Is art beyond money?” “Can art make some changes of the world?” Nevertheless, now is 2018, and we can see a great amount of works he left being considerably sensationalized in art market, which represents exactly the phenomena of his questioning for life in contemporary art. Under such circumstances, for friends and people who stand for the art spirit of LI Yuan-chia, how would they reckon and cope with it?
